The Locked
Gate.

"Beijing barred the foreign-broker exits. The signal underneath is louder than the news on top."

Sun · 25 May 2026 1 panel + Tape Gazette Cast: Adze · Hiro Lesson · 003 (FR)
NEW HERE? The Long End is a daily noir comic about how markets actually work. A Field Report is the long-form companion — bigger story, plain English, one foundation-grade lesson. This one watches a gate close in Beijing and asks what the lock is really for. No prior reading needed.
01

Last Friday Beijing told its citizens: you can no longer use foreign apps like Tiger Brokers or Futu to buy US and Hong Kong stocks. Existing accounts can sell what they own — they cannot buy anything new. Two years to wind it all down.

Futu was fined $271 million. Eight agencies signed the order. Adze watched from the right edge of the frame and did not look surprised.

A massive Chinese imperial gate labelled CAPITAL ACCOUNT is being pushed closed by ink-silhouette bureaucrats while small figures wearing FUTU and TIGER badges try to flee through the narrowing gap with briefcases of cash. A dropped smartphone on the stone floor shows a crashing crimson stock chart. Adze — black silhouette, fedora with gold band, cigarette ember glowing — stands calmly at the right edge of the frame watching. Caption: WHEN A GOVERNMENT BARS THE EXITS, ASK WHY THEY EXPECT A CROWD.
The GateCapital Account · Beijing · 22 May 2026. The doors close on the foreign brokers. Adze is the still point — the only figure not in motion.
§ 1 · Why China is doing this

Because the money was really leaving.

Last year, over $1 trillion quietly left the country. The biggest outflow ever recorded. Chinese citizens, nervous about the economy at home, moved money offshore through these apps to buy Apple, Tesla, Tencent in Hong Kong, US Treasuries — anything that wasn't denominated in their own currency.

Beijing finally said "enough" and pulled the plug.

When a government deploys eight agencies to stop money leaving, it's because the money was really leaving.

§ 2 · Why it matters to you

Mechanically — your funds are not affected.

It looks scary. But your ICAS fund and Dinasti fund are not affected. Different plumbing entirely. Your funds buy Chinese stocks the legal foreign-investor way (QFII / Stock Connect). The crackdown is on Chinese citizens going out, not foreigners coming in.

But the signal underneath is more important than the news itself. When a government locks the exits with eight agencies, it tells you something about confidence in China right now. It's not good.

§ 3 · Three things that could happen next

Three doors. Pick one to watch.

⓵ THE BORING OUTCOME

Most likely.

Money trapped inside China has nowhere to go except Chinese stocks. A-shares get a forced bid. ICAS could actually catch a tactical bounce. The bottom you thought already happened — might really be the bottom.

⓶ THE BAD OUTCOME

The cascade.

Chinese investors trapped in Hong Kong and US stocks panic and try to sell everything before the two-year deadline. Hang Seng crashes. That spills into broader Asian sentiment — including funds that look nothing like China.

⓷ THE CONTRARIAN OUTCOME

Nobody's talking about this one.

Beijing is closing the doors because they're about to do something dramatic — big stimulus, or letting the yuan weaken. You don't lock the exits unless you're about to give people a reason to want to leave. Watch the July Politburo meeting.

§ 4 · What to watch on your screen

Two numbers tell you which door opened.

▸ WATCH TAPE
USD/CNY Breaks 7.30 → China is losing control. Strengthens past 7.00 → housekeeping, not panic.
Hang Seng Tech Drops more than 10% in two weeks → the cascade has started.
§ 5 · What to tell clients if they ask

The line.

▸ CLIENT VOICE · LAYMAN
"Your funds aren't affected — different mechanism. But this tells us China is in defensive mode, which we're factoring into our outlook. We're not adding more China exposure until the yuan tells us which way this goes."

Clear-eyed. Not alarmist. Not dismissive. That's all.

The Tape Gazette ledger wall. Hiro Tanaka — black silhouette, fedora, shocked-eye ovals and crimson O-mouth — stands at the right, arm extended, pinning LESSON 003 with a brass tack. The card reads BELIEVE THE LOCK. Not the speech. Filed 25 May 2026, Capital Account, Beijing. Behind it, an older faded clipping from 1989 reads 'Tokyo locked the doors — filed before the bubble broke.' A warm bulb cone lights the cards from above; the corkboard wall is warm brown.
